ALLIANCE, Ohio – Travel enthusiasts and those with an adventurous side will have an opportunity to tour the “Mercedes Benz of travel trailers,” the Airstream, at the University of Mount Union this weekend.
Several members of the Airstream owner’s club will park their Airstreams on the practice field adjacent to Mount Union Stadium Thursday, September 26 through Saturday, September 28. In addition, Airstream will have two brand new units available for public viewing throughout the weekend.
Airstreams, the oldest RV manufacturer in the United States, are hand-built and feature state-of-the-art furnishings. They are built in Jackson Center, OH.
“In the history of the company, they made about 160,000 Airstreams,” said Tom Christopher, Airstream owner and event organizer. “About 100,000 of those are still on the road today – that’s how well built they are. They’re regularly featured as one of the best products in the world.”
According to Christopher, the owner’s club includes about 13,000 Airstream owners and the group does rallies similar to the one at Mount Union at various locations throughout the country. The high-end RVs have recently become iconic collector’s items for Hollywood actors and actresses.
“It’s an iconic symbol in America – everybody’s seen them and everybody’s talking about them,” Christopher said. “It’s a symbol of adventure and freedom.”
Christopher will be in attendance at the event with his own Airstream, a 2006, 30-foot Limited which features a home theatre, leather couch, flat-screen TV, full kitchen, furnace and air conditioning.
“People ask all the time if Airstreams are still manufactured,” Christopher said. “They are, but they’re not the same as they were. The only thing similar is the outside.”
Christopher, a die-hard Mount Union fan, noted that the owner’s club is in the midst of a movement to go to new locations and wanted to host an event on a college campus. Mount Union was selected as the first such location.
Airstreams will be available for tours beginning on Thursday and tours will be available until the 7 p.m. football kickoff versus Marietta at Mount Union Stadium on Saturday. For more information on the Airstream event, contact Christopher at 440-897-4714.
